Description
Calcium Carbonate (CaCO₃)
Calcium Carbonate is a chemical compound with the formula CaCO₃. It is a mineral base and one of the most widely used chemical materials. It has a trigonal crystal structure, is non-toxic and odorless, and commonly appears as a white powder. Calcium carbonate naturally occurs in the Earth’s crust, chalk, limestone, and marble.
This material is slightly soluble in water; therefore, in natural water systems it can be washed out and contributes to water hardness.
Applications of Calcium Carbonate:
- Gypsum production
- Flooring industries
- Steel industry
- Leather and hide processing
- Adhesive and resin industries
- Ceramic and tile manufacturing
- Production of PVC pipes and PVC sheets
In the plastics industry, precipitated calcium carbonate is used to reduce production costs and lower the final product price.
Safety Note:
Contact with skin and eyes may cause irritation. Inhalation of calcium carbonate dust, especially in powdered form, can irritate the respiratory system.
